Picture a small island with many retail businesses that require point of sale software to do their work. That is where the lesson began. Being a company that creates software applications we were agreeable to a joint venture to help the island retailers. After much work and frustration — wa-la success; we modified our POS system for our joint venture partner who was eager to go to market with the software application. The software was the perfect solution for the application; the only problem was a not so ethical customer who cloned the product. He bought only one after all his promises of selling dozens for us.
Working through the mystery of how only one product could be sold after all the money and time was spent to create the application, we determined we had one flaw. That flaw cost us thousands of dollars and we realized many software companies were facing the same issue: theft and cloning of software. Allowing crooks to make a profit by cutting out the company that designed and wrote the software. That was the motivation behind the SmartDongle.
